Louisiana Public Montessori School Chosen as a Top Magnet School in Nationwide Roundup

There’s tough competition in the world of magnet schools, encompassing as they do such a diverse range of educational styles and themes — not to mention budgets. But a public Montessori school in Baton Rouge was recently picked as one of the top magnet schools in the country, showcasing the pedagogy’s enduring ability to provide positive student outcomes and engagement in a public school setting.
Belfair Montessori Magnet School, in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, landed the honors as part of Magnet Schools of America’s yearly awards. The MSA exists to promote magnet schools nationwide, and the awards are a way to highlight the best of the best.
“To promote the holistic development of children by providing a Montessori education that cultivates independent learning and academic rigor, environmental awareness, empathy for others, social ease, and confidence,” reads Belfair Montessori’s website. Apparently the educators there are doing just that.
Belfair is in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, one of three Louisiana districts currently utilizing the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector’s Montessori Teacher Residency training program. A MACTE-accredited program, the MTR meets teachers where they are, allowing them to train in place in their own school systems and removing many of the hurdles traditionally associated with Montessori training.
So perhaps it’s no accident that the East Baton Rouge Parish School System also landed a major nod from the MSA at its conference in April — winning District of the Year in the organization’s bracket-style yearly contest. Magnet Mania pits districts from across the nation against one another (all in good fun, of course), and winners advance based on factors like diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, leadership, and family and community partnerships.
The district certainly has a host of other themes that played a part in securing the District of the Year win, but having a Montessori school in the mix is never a bad thing. As Belfair’s principal Pamela Dunlap says on the school’s website, “We believe that education is most meaningful when it supports the growth of the whole child. That means helping students become kind, socially aware individuals who respect others, care for the environment, and move through the world with grace and purpose … Together, we are shaping a generation of thoughtful, capable, and compassionate learners.”
