10/15/21 • Washington, DC • 11 DC Charter schools, including two Montessori schools (Breakthrough Montessori Public Charter School and Sojourner Truth Public Charter School) have been given approval from the DC Charter School Board to give admissions preference to students who are homeless, in the foster system, or receiving certain benefits, according to this piece on DCist.com.
Charter lotteries in DC and elsewhere are typically limited in the kinds of preferences they can offer, on the basis of offering all applicants an equal chance of enrollment. But critics have long argued that this in effect privileges families who have the time and resources to navigate choice and charter enrollment processes, which can be complex and time-consuming.
