4/12/2019 • Honolulu, HI • Hawaii has joined the ranks of states with teacher credential recognition for Montessori teacher training.

Teachers with an early childhood credential from any MACTE-accredited teacher education program can be eligible to obtain a Hawaii state PK-3 license, which allows teaching in public preschool through third grade, with the addition of a practicum and two elementary method courses from Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Chaminade also offers a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education which includes a MACTE-accredited Montessori 3-6 credential training. Upon completion of the degree program, students are eligible for a Hawaii state PK-K teaching license, which allows the teacher to work in a public preschool or kindergarten.

Hawaii is moving towards universal preschool. There are currently no public Montessori programs in the state, but Hawaii does have  a charter school law.
