5/14/2018 • Atlanta, GA • The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has approved a Montessori Teaching Certificate, under which a MACTE-accredited Montessori credential plus a content exam, an ethics exam, and three special education credits qualifies for a teaching certificate applicable in public Montessori schools only.
Georgia joins Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Wisconsin with similar rules in place. Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee have work underway, and Montana grants a full teaching certificate for a MACTE credential.
This is the result of a months-long collaboration among Montessori Partnerships for Georgia the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC), and a Montessori Certification Task Force, which included representatives from the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE), the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, the University System of Georgia, and Montessori schools and teacher training centers.
Response to the proposal in the Georgia education community was overwhelming. The Executive Secretary of the GaPSC said, “We’ve never received so many postive comments for any rule as we did for the Montessori certificate.”
